Strengthening school leadership to improve learning in early childhood and foundational literacy

Across Colombia, efforts to improve educational quality and equity are increasingly recognizing the essential role of school leaders in shaping learning environments where all children can thrive.
We work with aeioTU, Fundación Luker, and Empresarios por la Educación to strengthen school leadership through contextualized support that responds to the needs of schools and communities across Colombia.
Our Work with aeioTU
aeioTU is a Colombian organization focused on transforming early childhood education through innovative, inclusive, and community-centered approaches.
Adapting school leadership resources for early childhood education
In partnership with aeioTU, we adapted two of our core training modules around Cultivating a Culture of High Expectations and Shared Leadership for the Río, Juego y Aprendo program, a system-wide early childhood education program in Caquetá. The training supported 34 school leaders between 2021 and 2024 in building inclusive, high-quality learning environments for young children.
To expand access and reach, aeioTU also added an open, online version of Cultivating a Culture of High Expectations through their E-learning platform, available in Spanish. Within three weeks, the course attracted over 1,600 registered users from across the region, demonstrating the growing need for school leadership development in early childhood education.
Our Work with Fundación Luker
Fundación Luker is a Colombian foundation committed to improving education, entrepreneurship, and science and technology through partnerships and local capacity-building.
Supporting foundational learning through school leadership
We are partnering with Fundación Luker to strengthen the Aprendamos Todos a Leer (Let’s All Learn to Read) program, co-developed with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), across 50 schools in the Manizales region of Colombia, with support from the Jacobs Foundation. As a part of the program, they are providing training for school leaders on how to drive improvements in foundational literacy through coaching teachers, using evidence, distributing leadership, and creating an enabling learning environment in their school. In addition, we are building a network of principals and teachers to facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices in strengthening foundational learning in Colombia.
Our Work with Empresarios por la Educación
Empresarios por la Educación is a national network of Colombian business leaders and organizations working to strengthen public education through policy advocacy, knowledge sharing, and collaboration. The organization is a part of our Latin America and the Caribbean Hub for School Leadership (LAC Hub), focused on building a shared regional agenda for school leadership in the region.
We support their local initiatives by providing guidance and assistance in measurement, impact, and evaluation, and we are currently exploring pathways to further strengthen their ongoing efforts to improve education systems.
