Summit Opening

The State of School Leadership
in the Global South

Tuesday 4th Nov | 11 am UTC

75 minutes

Format: Framed keynote + high-level panel

Across the Global South, school leaders are the driving force behind education transformation — yet their voices, challenges, and innovations are often underrepresented in global conversations.

This powerful opening session sets the tone for the School Leadership Matters Summit, co-convened by Global School Leaders (GSL) and UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report.

Join global thought leaders and policymakers — including Andreas Schleicher (OECD), Manos Antoninis (UNESCO GEM), José Weinstein (LATAM), Iwan Syahril (SEA), and representatives from the African Union — as they unpack:

  • What the latest global data tells us about school leadership and learning outcomes

  • How regional systems enable or constrain leadership in practice

  • Why leadership must sit at the heart of education reform

Framing the Summit’s three-day journey from evidence to action, this plenary bridges data and lived experience to chart the future of education leadership in the Global South.
