Leveraging school leadership to improve foundational learning outcomes

Sierra Leone’s education system has made strides in expanding access to schooling, but foundational learning remains a key challenge. In recent years, national efforts have prioritized improving foundational learning outcomes, and school leaders have an essential role to play in translating these goals into practice. Yet, targeted support for school leaders remains limited.
In Sierra Leone, we are working with partners to explore how school leaders can strengthen foundational learning in their schools and communities. By working with EducAid and the National Youth Awareness Forum (NYAF), we are designing and testing ways to integrate school leadership support into broader efforts to improve foundational learning across the country.

Lead FLN: Strengthening school leadership for foundational learning

Lead FLN is our guide for school leaders on supporting foundational learning in the Global South. However, we realized that it is important to tailor support to school leaders and their context. In this programmatic and research collaboration, we developed two forms of school leader support.
-
With EducAid, we supported school leaders with workshops and coaching to strengthen their FLN-focused support of teachers.
-
With NYAF and our video production partner Inspiring Teachers, we supported school leaders to learn about FLN through a video-based course coupled with workshops and coaching.

Through these partnerships, we are now assessing the effectiveness of adding school leader training onto existing teacher-focused FLN programming and learning more about different ways of supporting school leaders.
