Global School Leaders
Job Description – Monitoring and Evaluation Director
School leaders have a large impact on the outcomes of their students and yet few countries have adequate professional development programs for their school heads. Global School Leaders is a US-based not-for-profit organization that improves educational outcomes of students from marginalized communities by training school leaders.
GSL is creating in-country affiliate organizations that provide continuous professional development to existing and aspiring school leaders. GSL’s core model is based on the India School Leadership Institute (ISLI) that has worked with more than 1,400 principals across five cities. GSL is now implementing programs via affiliate organizations in Malaysia, Indonesia and Kenya.
School leaders are a neglected lever within efforts to strengthen education systems globally. Particularly in countries in the Global South, school leaders are most often selected based on seniority and not demonstrated aptitude, they are inadequately supported through minimal administrative leadership training and no instructional leadership training, and they have unclear accountability structures that usually do not include student learning outcomes as a key measure of performance.
In the four countries in which GSL works, this lack of investment in school leaders means that over approximately 1.5 million school leaders do not receive professional development for their roles.
Evidence coming out of programs in the US and other Global North countries shows that school leaders may have a substantial impact on student learning outcomes. However, this evidence base has not been replicated in Global South countries, and in the absence of systemic evidence, education systems have been reluctant to invest in school leader training programs.
